Studios keep updating city building sims by changing the way they work, the settings they use, or the types of games they include.
City building games have been around for a long time because the way they work makes it easy to get into a flow state. It’s easy for gamers to get lost in the process of planning zones, studying services, making rules, and making sure everything runs smoothly. People can spend a huge amount of time on the same game for years, just to see how towns grow and find new ways to make processes work better.
Studios keep coming up with new ideas for the genre. In fact, some games are used to study and practice real-life policies for urban development. Others combine city-building with other types of games to make things more interesting, add new tasks, or give players great new places to play.
Pioneers Of Pagonia
- Release Date: Q4 2023
The name of the game says it all: Pioneers of Pagonia puts players in the middle of an island to help rebuild towns after a disaster destroyed colonies. Players move from island to island across the map to claim land, find supplies, plan tasks, and make deals with towns to join the archipelago.
Pagonia does not have RTS tools like Volker Wertich’s old game The Settlers. The player’s ability to plan cities and make decisions will affect battles, patrols, and even the growth of a town. Because each area is randomly created and different for each run, it’s important to learn how the game works.
- Released: March 28, 2023
In Terra Nil, players are not asked to build towns, but to clean up a dead world and bring life back to it.
This natural strategy game starts with a blank slate. Eco-technology will help players turn empty fields, dangerous soil, and dirty seas into beautiful places for animals to live. In this type of game, however, any technology used to change the land must also be cleaned up before the players leave.
In Terra Nil, players still build cities, but they also have to change the surroundings so that animals can live in healthy places.
